THIS IS THE TEACHER WHO DARES TO SPEAK WITH BOKO HARAM

Image
Few people talk openly about  Boko Haram  in northern Nigeria. Even fewer talk  to  them. But in her motherly way, the simple-looking Hamsatu Allamin is fearless and unapologetic. “I talk with Boko Haram even today, and they are open to [a] peace deal,” says Allamin, 60, sitting cross-legged on the floor of a yellowed bungalow, her veil circling her face and spilling down to the gray-green rug. This educator-turned-mediator looks anything but imposing. But she cracks hard ground digging for peace in a nine-year civil war that has killed 20,000 people.   So how can a woman speak to a sect that keeps women silent and slaughters them for not wearing veils? In this war-ravaged part of the country, the answers are retold with a personal bent and remixed city to city. “If that woman is not a member of Boko Haram, they would have finished her,” a friend in the northern city of Maiduguri, Ahmed Abubakar, tells me. “But if she is not one of them, then she must be a powerful witch using a

Police confirmed that on Saturday, May 18, around midnight an estimated 20 unidentified gunmen entered Unguwar Kuli village, a border community between Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State and Birnin Gwari LGA of Kaduna State. “The gunmen started shooting sporadically, went and intercepted some church members while closing from service,” according to the report. Reportedly, the attackers surrounded the church where the choir practice was taking place and “just started shooting,”  a witness in Dankade village told Nigerian newspaper  The Cable. “It was at about 12:30 midnight,” the witness said. “We had a combined choir practice in the church with other neighboring communities. Everybody was terrified but there was no how we could run because they had al

Northern Elders’ Forum orders Fulani herdsmen to vacate Southern Nigeria

Image
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has asked all Fulani herdsmen residing in the Southern part of the country to vacate immediately if their security is no longer guaranteed. Activities of Herdsmen have come under serious scrutiny after the recent killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader and a 40 year old farmer in Ogun state. Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, who addressed newsmen at a press conference in Abuja earlier today, said the order for the return of the herdsmen  was borne out of the realization that the lives of Fulani herdsmen residing in Southern Nigeria have been put at risk due to the actions and utterances of Southern Governors in recent days. In his words “We are worried about their well-being. If it is true that their safety can no longer be, we rather have them back in areas where their safety is guaranteed.  The bottom line is that their safety is far more important than their stay there. This is a country we
