THIS IS THE TEACHER WHO DARES TO SPEAK WITH BOKO HARAM

Image
Few people talk openly about  Boko Haram  in northern Nigeria. Even fewer talk  to  them. But in her motherly way, the simple-looking Hamsatu Allamin is fearless and unapologetic. “I talk with Boko Haram even today, and they are open to [a] peace deal,” says Allamin, 60, sitting cross-legged on the floor of a yellowed bungalow, her veil circling her face and spilling down to the gray-green rug. This educator-turned-mediator looks anything but imposing. But she cracks hard ground digging for peace in a nine-year civil war that has killed 20,000 people.   So how can a woman speak to a sect that keeps women silent and slaughters them for not wearing veils? In this war-ravaged part of the country, the answers are retold with a personal bent and remixed city to city. “If that woman is not a member of Boko Haram, they would have finished her,” a friend in the northern city of Maiduguri, Ahmed Abubakar, tells me. “But if she is not one of them, then she must be ...

Northern Elders’ Forum orders Fulani herdsmen to vacate Southern Nigeria

Image
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has asked all Fulani herdsmen residing in the Southern part of the country to vacate immediately if their security is no longer guaranteed. Activities of Herdsmen have come under serious scrutiny after the recent killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader and a 40 year old farmer in Ogun state. Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, who addressed newsmen at a press conference in Abuja earlier today, said the order for the return of the herdsmen  was borne out of the realization that the lives of Fulani herdsmen residing in Southern Nigeria have been put at risk due to the actions and utterances of Southern Governors in recent days. In his words “We are worried about their well-being. If it is true that their safety can no longer be, we rather have them back in areas where their safety is guaranteed.  The bottom line is that their safety is far more important than their stay...

Temi Olajide: How to Handle Mum-Guilt as a Working Parent

Image
there has never been more working women in the world than we have today. In fact, according to a World Bank research in 2011, more than half (57%) of Nigerian women between the ages of 15 – 64 years old are in some form of employment. So, the truth is that most women have to work to either support their partners, or to provide for their kids as a single parent. As a result of this, many mums have no choice but to spend long hours away from their little ones. Most mums are often consumed with guilt, because they have to leave their children early in life to the care of either family, daycare/creche, nannies or after school programmes. The truth is your reality requires you to work, so the earlier you embrace your decision, the faster you will find ways to deal with your mummy guilt. If you really had a choice, you’d probably take your little one everywhere with you. But the truth is you don’t; the next best thing is to manage the situation in the best po...

Resort formal Just because the wedding will be held on or near a beach doesn’t mean wearing a fancy cover-up or flip-flops are appropriate for the event. The men can wear a cutaway coat with tails, a vest, and pin-striped pants with a top hat-optional. Another option is a m...

Image
The Fulani socio-cultural organisation in Nigeria, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, has called on President Buhari to as a matter of urgency, arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent remarks on insecurity in the country. The group said the former President in his open letter to President Buhari released today July 15th, accused Fulani herdsmen of being the root cause of insecurity in the country. The former President in his open letter, said it is quite unfortunate that criminality has now been attached to the Fulani tribe because President Buhari is from the Fulani extraction. ''The unfortunate situation is that the criminality is being perceived as a ‘Fulani’ menace unleashed by Fulani elite in the different parts of the country for a number of reasons but even more, unfortunately, many Nigerians and non-Nigerians who are friends of Nigeria attach vicarious responsibility to you as a Fulani elite and the current captain of the Nigeria ship.
